Looking for online communities of new-media artists? Resources for designers? Or just new experiences to enlarge your art horizons? Try these links.

Rhizome.org is a huge and growing site that curates new-media art and links the global new-media artists community.

Community Arts Network (CAN) promotes information exchange, research and critical dialogue within the field of community-based art. Its site contains news items, articles documenting community-based arts projects in the U.S. and worldwide, and the full text of a book,The Citizen Artist, that collects articles from 20 years of High Performance Magazine, a now-defunct publication that for many years was a major resource on socially engaged artmaking.

Americans for the Arts is an arts advocacy group that tracks important developments in arts policy in the U.S. Sign up on their site for the Cultural Policy listserv, which sends weekly updates on policy developments that affect the arts and on jobs in the field of arts policy. Their links page will direct you to a variety of arts advocacy groups, including governmental resources.

The Yes Men (yes, they’re the ones with the documentary) create powerful social satires through a very simple technique: they tell the exact truth. Their links page is an education on how to use art to stir things up.

AIGA, the American Institute for Graphic Arts, is the preeminent organization for professional designers. The site contains a wealth of articles and information related to design theory and practice. Members of Mason’s AIGA student chapter (link) can access the full range of resources on the site via their individual passwords.

Art Calendar, where you can sample and order this 20-year-old publication that helps artists learn more about the business side of art and that lists dozens of current calls for submissions to juried shows.
