Professional Activities & Achievments:
Maria Karametou is a mixed media artist whose exhibition record includes: The National Museum of Women in the Arts; The Vorres Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens, Greece; The North Dakota Museum; The Baltimore Museum; The Portsmouth Museum (VA); The Danville Museum (VA); The John Elder Gallery, N. Y., N.Y.; Harper Collins Gallery, N. Y., N.Y.; Trito Mati Gallery, Athens, Greece; Elite Gallery, Moscow, Russia; Comus Gallery, Portland, Oregon; Selby Gallery, Sarasota, Florida; J.Scott Gallery, Johnson, Vermont; The C. Grimaldis Gallery, Baltimore, MD among numerous others.

In the Washington area her work has been exhibited at: the Ellipse Arts Center, the Arlington Art Center, Flashpoint, Warehouse Gallery, Washington Square, McLean Project for the Arts,  WPA/C,  Dimock Gallery, Maryland Art Place, School 33 Art Center, Gallery 10 and in many other venues. She was represented by Gallery K from 1987 until its closing in 2003.

Karametou's work is in permanent collections worldwide such as the Vorres Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens, Greece, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and included in the collection of His Excellency the U. S. Ambassador to Greece and Mrs. Thomas Miller during his tenure. It is currently featured in the official 2006 desk diary published by the U.S. Department of State, Vienna, Austria for use by all U.S. Embassies worldwide.

Karametou is the recipient of many awards such as Individual Artist Grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, and has participated in several Biennial Exhibitions including the ARTSITES Œ96 Regional Biennial and the Maryland State Biennial, Baltimore Museum of Art, for which she received the First Prize.

Other professional activities involve the International Collaborative Multi-site Project  "Penelopeia" and being a Visiting Artist at the international symposium "Earth" at the Skopelos Foundation For the Arts in Skopelos Island, Greece (Mayor¹s Award). She sits on the Board of Directors of the Arlington Arts Center.

Reviews of Karametou's work include among others: The Washington Post; the Baltimore Sun; the New Art Examiner; Washington City Paper; Baltimore City Paper; The Evening Sun; To Vima; the Kathimerini; Epikera magazine; the Voice of America; The Alternative; Washington Review; Eikastika Magazine; National Herald; Hellenic News; VOGUE magazine (Greek Edition) and an "Antenna" Greek National Television interview (2004).

Her work is also featured in the book "The Power Of Visual Logos" (ICAN 2003).

Karametou studied painting and drawing in her native Greece with Theodoros Drosos before immigrating to the U.S. She holds a BA (cum laude) from the University of Maryland and the MFA from the Maryland Institute of Art, Hoffberger School of Painting, in Baltimore, Maryland where she studied with renowned painter Grace Hartigan. She has taught among other institutions at George Washington University, the University of Maryland (European Division), the University of La Verne and Montgomery College. She has also developed and taught workshops relating to her own work for the Virginia Museum statewide and has lectured independently on various art related topics.
